A mechanical fitter and turner's job description includes:

- **Assembling**Using precision measuring tools, fitting metal parts into products and assembling them to create machines and equipment
- **Setting up**Setting up machinery for manufacturing, and setting controls for machining tools, presses, and têxtile machines
- **Repairing**Diagnosing faults and repairing mechanical parts, fluid power equipment, and valves, tank linings, and lead pipes
- **Maintaining**Performing regular maintenance on machines and plants
- **Installing**Installing and commissioning plant and machinery, and erecting machines and equipment on-site
- **Cutting**Cutting, threading, bending, and installing hydraulic and pneumatic pipes and lines
- **Forming**Forming metal stock and castings using machining tools to press, cut, grind, plane, bore, and drill metal
- **Interpreting**Studying drawings and specifications to determine suitable material, method, and sequence of operations

Mechanical fitters and turners work in factories and workshops, and most work full time. They may work long hours, including over the weekend, at night, and on public holidays.
