A preschool assistant teacher's responsibilities include:

- Supporting the teacher: Assisting with lesson plans, activities, and classroom management
- Creating a safe environment: Ensuring the classroom is clean and organized, and that children are safe and supported
- Helping children: Supporting children's learning, providing individualized attention, and helping with basic needs like using the bathroom and handwashing
- Communicating with parents: Providing information about children's development and preparation for kindergarten, and participating in parent-teacher conferences
- Documenting progress: Recording time outs and suspensions, and maintaining individual records for each child
- Preparing snacks: Preparing and serving lunch or healthy snacks
- Helping with special needs: Alerting the teacher to special needs of individual children
- Staying current: Attending staff development and reading current literature and publications

Some skills that are useful for a preschool assistant teacher include: Experience in childcare or preschool settings, Strong communication skills, Knowledge of early childhood education principles and practices, Familiarity with play-based teaching methods, and Ability to manage challenging behaviors.
