Pharmacists have many responsibilities, including:

- **Dispensing medications**: Fill prescriptions, calculate, weigh, and mix ingredients, and ensure the correct amount is dispensed
- **Ensuring safety**: Check for allergies and other interactions, and verify that the patient is not at risk of adverse reactions
- **Educating patients**: Instruct patients on how to take their medication, side effects, and storage
- **Providing advice**: Offer general health advice, such as on exercise, stress management, and equipment or supplies
- **Administering vaccinations**: Give vaccinations, such as flu shots
- **Managing records**: Keep patient and pharmacy records, including inventories, registries of controlled drugs, and charge system files
- **Ordering supplies**: Order and purchase pharmaceutical supplies, medical supplies, and drugs
- **Maintaining stock**: Maintain stock and store and handle it properly
- **Working with other healthcare professionals**: Collaborate with other healthcare professionals to plan, monitor, and evaluate the quality or effectiveness of drugs
- **Supervising staff**: Oversee and manage pharmacy interns and technicians
- **Working with insurance companies**: Work with insurance companies to resolve billing issues

The specific role of a pharmacist varies depending on where they work, such as in a hospital or in a retail setting. To become a pharmacist, you typically need to earn a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree. You can earn a PharmD in as little as six years, including two years of undergraduate study and four years of full-time doctoral study. You can gain experience in the field by working as a pharmacy technician while in college or pharmacy school.
