**Laboratory Technologist - Histopathology**

Conceptualized in the year 2004 as a philanthropic initiative for the Eastern and North-Eastern
parts of India and the neighboring countries, the Tata Medical Center (TMC) started operations in
Kolkata on May 16, 2011. The hospital is governed by a charitable trust - Tata Medical Centre Trust.
It is an integrated Oncology facility with well-trained professional staff and equipped with modern
facilities and the most contemporary medical equipment. The hospital was designed by Cannon
Design, a renowned architectural firm from North America. It is located on 13 acres of land at New
Town in Kolkata, West Bengal.

beds, serves all sections of the society, with 75% of the infrastructure earmarked for subsidized

treatment for the underprivileged sections. It provides a wide spectrum of services from diagnosis

and therapy to rehabilitation and palliative support. The Institution’s objective is to excel in service,

education and research.

i. Lab Technologist (Histopathology)

**Qualification**: 10+2 in science background with DMLT or B.Sc with DMLT from a recognized
institution.

**Experience**: Minimum 1 year post qualification experience in the relevant specialty in a recognized
laboratory of repute. Freshers may also apply.

**Brief Job Description**:
**SPECIFIC DUTY**:
The technical job responsibilities include
- **1. Collection center **

Collection center and phlebotomy unit is generally manned by separate staff, but lab
technicians need to train the staff well on sample collection protocols and supervise their
functions.

**2. Sample receiving **

Accurate cross
- matching of all details on label of container with requisition is important.
Inform fellow after receiving large specimen and refill/change formalin to appropriate

amount.

**3. Autopsy duty**

**4. Grossing **

Grossing small biopsies including entry of gross notes into HIS
Help fellow in grossing large specimens - printing cassettes, putting sections in cassettes,

entering in bits book, taking gross notes, help with taking photographs
Help with bone cutting using bone saw

**1. Tissue processing **

Loading the tissue processor every evening after accurately putting in cassettes in order.
Taking out cassettes next morning
Maintenance and cleaning of tissue processor.

Machine Maintenance and cleaning

**3. Cutting **

Cleaning of the microtome and water bath***

**4. Staining using the autostainer **

Checking staining quality before slide submission
Maintaining control and QC sheets
Machine maintenance and cleaning

**5. Cover slipping and labeling - take care not to hide outside labels**

**6. Slide submission with QC sheet**

**7. Special stains**

**8. Immunohistochemistry **

Using the bondmax
Machine maintenance and cleaning
Manual method if necessary
Checking controls and staining quality before side submission
Frozen section
Decalcification

**9. Maintenance of stock register **

Accurate book keeping and regular audits are necessary
Regular checking of expiry date of reagents
Supply of formalin/containers/Coplin jars to various OPDs/OT.
Maintaining of library inventory

**10. Cytology **

Going down to FNA suite to help fellow with procedure and also prepare slides
Keep FNA cart ready and well stocked with equipment (gloves/syringe/slide/stain

kit/consent form etc)
Preparation of slides and cell block
While working minimize formation of aerosol droplets
Maintenance of cytospin

**11. Slide filing**

**12. Slide return** (of outside slides and blocks and recuts of inhouse cases) to patients after

filling in details in the register and seeking permission from reporting consultant.

Signature of patient/relative is mandatory

**13. Attending to patients and phone calls **

Technicians are expected to answer phone calls to give patients an approximate idea of
when the report should be ready and the cause for delay.

They are also expected to deal with queries from patients and their relatives who come to
the lab and refer to the consultant if required.

**14. Specimen disposal **

Specimens to be disposed regularly (after 3 month storage as per protocol) after complete
entry in the register.

**15. Supervision of cleaning by house keeping **

Keep the working place free of material not needed for the purpose
At the end of the day work surface to be cleaned by a disinfectant by housekeeping under

the labtech’s supervision.
Weekly cleaning of gross room fridge on Saturdays.

**16. Maintenance of machines **

Only trained personnel should handle instrument connected to power supply
Maintenance log sheets to be filled in regularly.
