Chemotherapy Staff Nurse

The Chemotherapy Nurse is responsible for administering chemotherapy treatments to patients with cancer. This includes preparing chemotherapy medications, administering them via intravenous (IV) or other routes, and monitoring patients for side effects. Chemotherapy nurses also educate patients and their families about the treatment process, side effects, and management strategies.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities**:
Patient Care:
- Administer chemotherapy medications according to physician orders and established protocols.
- Monitor patients during and after chemotherapy administration for side effects and adverse reactions.
- Assess and manage patient symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and pain.
- Educate patients and their families about chemotherapy, side effects, and self-care strategies.
- Provide emotional support to patients and their families throughout the treatment process.
Medication Preparation:
- Prepare chemotherapy medications accurately and safely, following aseptic technique.
- Calculate chemotherapy dosages and verify calculations with a second nurse.
- Label and store chemotherapy medications appropriately.
Documentation:
- Document all aspects of patient care, including medication administration, vital signs, and adverse events.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records.
Collaboration:
- Collaborate with physicians, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure optimal patient care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and care conferences.
Quality Improvement:
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives to improve patient outcomes and safety.
- Identify and report adverse events and medication errors.
**Education**:
Stay current on the latest advancements in chemotherapy and oncology nursing.
Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.

Bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN) required.
Master's degree in nursing (MSN) preferred.
