A microbiology technician's job is to assist scientists in a laboratory setting by working with microscopic organisms, such as bacteria and fungi. Their responsibilities include:
- Preparing samples: Preparing media, samples, and reagents for testing
- Conducting tests: Performing microbial efficacy tests and other tests, such as bioburden and liquid chemistry tests
- Maintaining equipment: Preparing, sterilizing, and calibrating equipment used for microbial testing
- Recording results: Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of test results
- Collaborating with researchers: Supporting ongoing experiments and contributing to data analysis
- Maintaining a sterile environment: Ensuring the laboratory is kept sterile and organized
- Managing inventory: Managing the inventory of lab materials and stock cultures of microorganisms
- Handling biohazardous waste: Coordinating and handling the disposal of biohazardous waste
- Consulting with customers: Answering questions about test methods and results
