A CNC programmer is responsible for developing machines that cut raw materials/ metal into useful tools and parts. These CNC machines turn digital files into computer instructions. Using the CNC machines, a programmer can create conventional devices like lathes, milling machines or drills.

At the workplace, a CNC programmer creates the instructions for controlling and directing this machinery. The programmers create and develop these instructions by analyzing the blueprint and models of a tool to find out the most efficient production method. CNC programmers often use CAM software to create 3D models of the tools and parts.

A typical job description for a CNC programmer may include responsibilities such as reading and interpreting technical blueprints and design models, loading raw materials into the CNC machine, inputting the product design into the computer modeling software, choosing and loading the correct cutting tools for the job, adjusting machine settings to the desired product specifications, troubleshooting issues during the manufacturing process, completing quality control tests during the manufacturing stage and on the final product, cleaning and maintaining the machine, and training new staff on machine operation procedures.
