Operation Theatre Nurse

**Key Responsibilities**:

- **Preoperative Care**:

- **Patient Assessment**: Assess the patient's physical and emotional condition before surgery, including checking medical history, allergies, and medications.
- **Preparation**: Prepare the operating room by ensuring it is sterile, organized, and equipped with necessary surgical instruments and supplies.
- **Patient Education**: Provide patients with information on what to expect during the surgical procedure and the recovery process.
- **Assist with Patient Positioning**: Ensure the patient is safely and correctly positioned for the procedure.
- **Intraoperative Care (During Surgery)**:

- **Sterile Technique**: Maintain a sterile environment in the operating room to prevent infection, including wearing proper attire (gown, gloves, mask).
- **Assisting the Surgical Team**: Hand surgical instruments, sutures, and other supplies to the surgeon as needed.
- **Monitoring Patient's Vital Signs**: Monitor the patient's vital signs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature during the surgery, and inform the surgical team of any changes.
- **Assisting Anesthetist**: Work alongside the anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist to ensure proper anesthesia administration and patient comfort.
- **Documentation**: Keep accurate records of the surgical procedure, including any complications or changes to the planned procedure.
- **Postoperative Care**:

- **Patient Recovery**: Ensure the patient is safely moved from the operating table to the recovery area and monitor their condition closely.
- **Pain Management**: Administer prescribed medications to manage post-surgery pain and assist with patient comfort.
- **Monitoring Vital Signs**: Continue to monitor the patient's vital signs, including respiratory and cardiac status, in the recovery room.
- **Postoperative Instructions**: Provide instructions to patients and family members on post-surgery care, including wound care, signs of complications, and follow-up appointments.
- **Documentation**: Record observations and care given in the patient's medical record and update the surgical team on patient recovery.
- **Sterility and Infection Control**:

- **Maintain a Sterile Field**: Ensure that all surgical instruments are sterilized and that the surgical team adheres to strict infection control protocols.
- **Decontamination**: Clean and sterilize surgical instruments and the operating room after each procedure to maintain a safe, hygienic environment.
- **Collaboration and Communication**:

- **Teamwork**: Work collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical assistants, and other healthcare professionals to ensure efficient and safe surgical procedures.
- **Patient Advocacy**: Act as the patient’s advocate, ensuring their safety, dignity, and comfort throughout the surgical process.
- **Communication with Families**: Update patients’ families about the surgery and recovery process.

**Skills & Qualifications**:

- **Education**: A registered nursing qualification (RN), typically requiring a nursing diploma or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
- **Licensure**: Must be licensed as a registered nurse (RN) and may require specialized certifications in perioperative nursing (e.g., CNOR - Certified Nurse Operating Room).
- **Experience**: Previous experience in a surgical or clinical setting is usually required. Some positions may require experience as a scrub nurse or circulating nurse in the operating room.
- **Knowledge**: Familiarity with surgical procedures, sterile techniques, and infection control practices. Knowledge of anesthesia, pain management, and emergency protocols.
- **Attention to Detail**: Strong organizational skills and the ability to maintain a sterile, safe operating environment.
- **Communication Skills**: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with surgical teams, patients, and their families.
- **Physical Stamina**: Ability to stand for long periods and assist with physically demanding tasks during surgeries.

**Working Conditions**:

- Work is conducted in an operating room environment, which requires wearing personal protective equipment (PPE) such as gloves, gowns, and masks.
- The role may involve long hours, night shifts, and being on call depending on the surgical schedule and emergencies.
- Due to the nature of the role, a high level of focus, responsibility, and the ability to work under pressure is required.
