An HVAC operator, or HVAC technician, installs, maintains, and repairs heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. They may work in residential, commercial, public, or industrial buildings. Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair HVAC systems
- Perform routine maintenance, such as cleaning ducts and filters, and checking for leaks
- Diagnose and troubleshoot system malfunctions
- Perform emergency repairs
- Recharge refrigerant levels
- Ensure the refrigerant cycle is functioning correctly
- Perform energy-efficiency upgrades
- Explain maintenance procedures to customers
- Maintain accurate records
- Follow safety protocols and local HVAC regulations

**Qualifications**:

- High school diploma or GED
- Additional training and education after high school, such as an apprenticeship
- A current HVAC-related license

Additional information
- HVAC technicians may work on a variety of systems, including refrigeration systems, air conditioning units, and heating pumps
- They may need to work with power tools and hand tools
- They may need to communicate with customers and clients
- They may need to keep up with ongoing training to stay current with new technologies
