A car technician, also known as an automotive technician or mechanic, performs a variety of tasks to service, maintain, and repair vehicles:

- Identify problemsUse diagnostic equipment to identify problems with a vehicle's engine, transmission, electrical system, or other components
- Perform maintenancePerform basic maintenance like oil changes, tire rotations, and fluid level checks
- Repair and replace partsRepair or replace worn parts, such as brake pads, wheel bearings, and sensors
- Test vehiclesTest vehicles on the road to confirm repairs and ensure they meet safety and emission standards
- Communicate with customersExplain problems and repairs to clients, and provide estimates for labor and time
- Maintain recordsUpdate vehicle service records and keep track of warranties
- Keep equipment runningMaintain shop equipment by performing preventive maintenance and troubleshooting breakdowns
- Stay currentParticipate in training sessions and read technical publications to learn new automotive techniques and information

Automotive technicians typically have a high school diploma or GED, and many also have an ASE certification. Additional certifications in brand-specific automotive repair can be an asset.
