Key job responsibilities
You validate product behavior using team-provided SOPs, test tools, and automation. You are learning the various forms of testing methodologies (e.g., functional, unit, integration, system, performance, etc.) and can discern which SOP or tool is the right one to utilize for the assignment. You are able to install/configure software use debug settings. Your work focuses on testing existing components and features with well-defined project requirements. You are able to take a defined test plan, write relevant black box test cases and deliver it on schedule. You may participate in bug bashes or be asked to perform ad hoc testing. Your work (e.g., test coverage, test execution, etc.) is prioritized and reviewed by a QAE, SDE-T, or manager.
You find bugs worth fixing. You perform the first pass to see how effective a test case is and then modify it to appropriately cover the component or feature. You interpret test results and provide relevant information into easily digestible formats (e.g., reports, wiki, etc.). You describe defects in detail, provide screen shots, gather logs/traces, and add to bug reports. You are able to discern the difference between a script failure and a product failure. You identify defect leakage from various sources (e.g., Beta, customer complaint). You report failures that may be caused by environmental factors (i.e., occur under certain lab conditions). You verify that bugs resolved as ‘fixed’ are truly fixed.
You take the time to learn about how the components and features you test interact to create a particular customer experience. You are able to answer questions about this functionality. You use your knowledge help partner teams prioritize fixes. You assist with the maintenance and improvement of team/product test suites. You provide feedback on coverage, the clarity of test instructions/SOPs, the quality of the automation, and audit mechanisms (e.g., metrics, alarms, reports, ticketing root causes, etc.). You escalate when automation scripts fail, when tests hit blocks, and when actions needed deviate from SOPs. Where applicable, you manage the lab infrastructure based on project needs. You help train new QAT hires and may provide instruction to Device Associates and other types of employees that are involved with functional testing.
