- **Preparing the operating room**Scrub nurses prepare the operating room for surgery by ensuring all equipment and supplies are available, sterilizing and counting tools, and draping the patient.
- **Maintaining a sterile field**Scrub nurses maintain a sterile field during the surgery by passing instruments to the surgeon, and by ensuring that trays, linen, and other items are sterile.
- **Assisting the surgical team**Scrub nurses assist the surgeon and other members of the surgical team by helping them put on sterile gowns and gloves, and by anticipating their needs.
- **Caring for the patient**Scrub nurses provide patient care before, during, and after surgery, by answering questions, helping patients understand the procedure, and monitoring vital signs.
- **Ensuring patient safety**Scrub nurses ensure patient safety by adhering to health and safety standards, and by considering potential complications.
- **Preparing for emergencies**Scrub nurses prepare for emergencies by assembling emergency materials and remaining on call for emergency surgery.
