**Description**
An urban designer is a professional who plans and designs the physical and social development of urban areas. They consider the practical aspects of a city's built environment, such as buildings, roads, and public spaces, as well as its social and cultural characteristics. The urban designer's job is to create attractive, functional, and sustainable environments for people to live, work, and play in. They work with other professionals, such as architects, engineers, and city planners, to ensure that urban design projects meet the needs of the community and the broader city.
**Job responsibility**:
- Understand the principles of good urban design and how they can be applied to create livable, sustainable, and attractive cities and neighborhoods.
- Understand the relationships between the built environment, social factors, economic development, and transportation systems.
- Be familiar with a variety of analytical methods and tools that can be used to assess the physical form of cities and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Have a strong understanding of the history of urban design and planning, and how current trends are shaped by this history.
- Be able to effectively communicate urban design concepts to a non-technical audience through writing and presentation.
- Work collaboratively with architects, engineers, planners, landscape architects, and other professionals to create comprehensive plans and designs for urban areas.
- Prepare reports, feasibility studies, master plans, and other documents that describe the goals, rationale, and implementation strategies for urban design projects.
- Manage and coordinate the work of consultants and other team members working on urban design projects.
- Monitor project progress and budget to ensure that objectives are met within the desired timeframe and budget constraints.
- Advocate for sound urban design practices at the local, state, and federal level, and participate in public outreach and education efforts.
- Serve as a liaison between the public and private sector on urban design issues.
- Keep abreast of new technologies, materials, and approaches to urban design, and incorporate these into project designs when appropriate.
- create detailed drawings using your artistic or graphic skills, converting your vision into a technical drawing, using specific programmes and software such as computer-aided design (CAD)
**Duties**:
- Participate in meetings with clients to gather information about their needs, interests, and goals.
- Develop plans for new communities or neighborhoods in accordance with the client’s vision for the project.
- Create environmental impact analyses and conduct environmental audits to determine the potential effects of proposed construction projects on surrounding ecosystems.
- Study the existing conditions of a community or neighborhood to determine how it could be improved.
- Prepare reports with design concepts and sketches of proposed plans for review by clients or other stakeholders involved in the project.
- Communicate with clients to gather requirements and feedback about design concepts.
- Work with engineers and architects to develop drawings for construction projects such as roads and bridges
- Prepare construction budgets, timelines, and schedules based on client requests.
- Conduct public outreach to solicit input from residents and community groups on proposed design changes.
**Skills**:
- Bachelor’s degree in architecture, landscape architecture, or urban design.
- Proficiency in AutoCAD, SketchUp, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
- Excellent graphic communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and with a team.
- Strong writing and research skills.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel.
- Proficiency in Rhino, Grasshopper, V-Ray, and Revit.
- Experience leading design charrettes and workshops.
- Experience with GIS mapping software.
