Textile designers create patterns and prints for fabrics that are used in clothing, home furnishings, and paper-based products. Their work can include: Researching: Analyzing current trends, commercial and cultural requirements, and products Consulting: Working with clients and business partners to determine design briefs Creating: Generating original ideas, sketches, renderings, and colorways for fabric designs Developing: Working up patterns for clothing, soft furnishings, wall coverings, bed linens, and carpets Producing: Sourcing fabrics, working with electronic looms and computer-aided design (CAD) software, and supervising the production process Monitoring: Ensuring quality standards are met Textile designers can work in a variety of settings, including factories, backrooms, design studios, homes, and workshops. They can be employed by small têxtile industries, multinational têxtile manufacturers, design practices, and interior design and decoration companies, or they can work on a freelance basis.
