**AIPH University**

In the U.S., there are 143 allopathic and 36 osteopathic medical schools along with 44 schools of public health. In India there are over 500 medical colleges and only two public health universities including AIPH University. Today, AIPH University imparts the required (1) Education (MPH and PhD) in the major domains of public health and conducts population-based, hospital, and laboratory (2) Research, and renders the required (3) Service - the primary three pillars of higher education accepted as norms in every western country. The biological sciences and management programs are designed to provide interdisciplinary opportunities to meet the current needs of the country and the region.

Principals of Asian Institute of Public Health (AIPH) started working in India in 2001 to address the unmet needs to improve neonatal and infant mortality. Starting with the largest surveillance study of neonatal sepsis in the community, several programs were launched in maternal and child health. AIPH was established in 2008 with support from University of Maryland under the patronage of the Chief Minister of Odisha.

A new MPH program was launched with the help from University of Nebraska in 2011 and is being run independently by AIPH since 2015 with approval from the Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha. Several masters level degree and multiple certificate and diploma programs are also being offered. Faculty and collaborators of AIPH University have published in the most prestigious medical journals including Nature, Lancet, New England Journal of Medicine, and PLoS Medicine and have received world-wide accolades for discovering and describing interventions that will save millions of lives every year and significant health care expense in India and many resource-constrained settings around the world. Hard core bench science and population-based longitudinal assessments in large field sites allow AU faculty and students to conduct in-depth medical, and socio-behavioral investigations as they concurrently study health systems, environmental exposures, health equity and tribal health. These superlative and unique activities have enabled AIPH to attract funding and collaboration from WHO, UNICEF, DBT, ICMR, NHM, DFID, Child Health Research Foundation (with funding from Bill and Melina Gates Foundation) and several U.S. Canada, and UK-based major universities.

AIPH University has now entered a new phase in its development and has assembled significant financial and intellectual capital to bring synergy and provide unsurpassed opportunities to its faculty and students as they teach and learn using this unique and only such platform in South Asia. Public health is still in its infancy in India and most developing countries. India has boldly recognized areas that cannot wait to receive attention such as water sanitation and hygiene, drug resistance infections, and TB.
