A school librarian is responsible for managing a school library, providing students and staff with access to a diverse collection of books, media, and resources, assisting with research, promoting reading culture, and facilitating learning by organizing library materials, conducting library instruction sessions, and coordinating special programs and events within the school environment. Key responsibilities of a school librarian:
- **Collection development and management**:
- Selecting, acquiring, and cataloging new library materials (books, ebooks, audiobooks, DVDs, etc.)
- Maintaining and updating the library catalog system
- Organizing and shelving library materials according to classification systems
- Performing regular inventory checks to ensure accurate records
- **User services**:
- Assisting students and teachers with research needs by providing reference assistance and guiding them in finding relevant information
- Teaching library skills and information literacy classes to students of different age groups
- Promoting reading culture through book displays, recommendations, and author visits
- Responding to inquiries from students and staff regarding library resources
- **Programming and outreach**:
- Planning and executing library programs and events like book clubs, author presentations, story times, and themed displays
- Collaborating with teachers to integrate library resources into classroom curriculum
- Creating online library guides and digital resources for students and teachers
- **Administrative tasks**:
- Managing the library budget and allocating funds for acquisitions
- Maintaining library records and statistics
- Supervising library assistants or student volunteers
- Ensuring the library is a safe and welcoming space for all users
