The dental hygienist performs preventive dental care, cleanings, and assessments under the direction of a dentist. They provide direct patient care, educate patients on proper oral hygiene, and assist in the identification of dental issues or concerns. The hygienist ensures that patients receive high-quality care and maintain oral health.

**Key Responsibilities**:

- **Patient Care**:

- Perform professional teeth cleanings (scaling, polishing, debridement) to remove plaque, tartar, and stains.
- Take and develop dental X-rays as needed.
- Conduct oral health assessments, including reviewing medical histories, measuring gum pockets, and screening for signs of oral disease or abnormalities.
- Provide guidance on proper brushing, flossing, and other oral care practices to patients.
- Educate patients on the importance of diet, oral hygiene, and habits that affect oral health (e.g., smoking or teeth grinding).
- **Documentation**:

- Maintain accurate patient records, documenting treatments performed, findings, and any changes in the patient's oral health.
- Update and review patient medical histories to identify any risk factors or contraindications.
- **Assisting the Dentist**:

- Assist the dentist during various procedures by providing instruments and maintaining a clean working environment.
- Inform the dentist of any issues, concerns, or findings during patient examinations.
- **Patient Education**:

- Educate patients about the importance of maintaining oral hygiene to prevent dental diseases, tooth decay, and gum issues.
- Offer information on treatments and procedures that can improve or maintain oral health.
- **Preventive Care and Health Promotion**:

- Monitor oral health and recommend referrals to other dental specialists (such as periodontists or orthodontists) if needed.
- **Sterilization and Infection Control**:

- Follow strict sterilization and infection control protocols to maintain a safe and clean environment.
- Prepare and disinfect dental equipment and instruments.
- **Administrative Duties (if applicable)**:

- Schedule patient appointments and manage patient flow.
- Assist with billing, insurance claims, and coding related to dental services.

**Qualifications and Skills**:

- **Education**: Associate's degree in dental hygiene from an accredited program.
- **Licensure**: Valid state license to practice as a dental hygienist.
- **Certifications**: CPR certification, and additional certifications as required by state law (e.g., anesthesia administration, X-ray certification).
- **Skills**:

- Knowledge of dental anatomy, oral health care techniques, and infection control practices.
- Ability to perform dental cleanings, scaling, and root planing.
- Strong communication skills to educate patients and work with a team of dental professionals.
- Detail-oriented with excellent organizational skills.
- Compassionate and patient-focused approach to care.

**Work Environment**:

- Typically works in a dental office or clinic, either independently or as part of a team with a dentist and dental assistants.
- May involve standing for long periods and working with a variety of dental tools and instruments.

**Physical Requirements**:

- Ability to handle small tools and equipment with precision.
- May require sitting or standing for long periods during patient care.
- Good manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination.
