- Monitoring and administering medication: GNM nurses are skilled at administering medications and intravenous infusions
- Assisting with admission and discharge: GNM nurses assist doctors with patient admission and discharge
- Preparing patients for procedures: GNM nurses prepare patients for ECT and other procedures and therapies
- Maintaining records: GNM nurses maintain records and reports for the unit
- Supervising students and staff: GNM nurses supervise students and ancillary staff
- Providing care to newborns: GNM nurses provide care to newborns and conduct normal deliveries

GNM nurses also need to have excellent teamwork skills, problem solving skills, and multitasking skills.
