SQL Dba

**Overview**

The secondary purpose is to provide support to the business and technology departments in the use of Waystone Group’s SQL Server based systems and database tools and technologies. The SQL DBA will be required to provide support and assistance to the wider Data Services team across alternate database technologies to support the day-to-day operation through BAU activities, ensuring data integrity is maintained and the best possible service available to support business processes, including out of hours on call.

**Key Accountabilities and main responsibilities**

Strategic Focus

To meet SLA all the time with agreed quality with counterpart, maintain good working relationships with colleagues, collaborate with others to achieve the team’s goals.
- Identify, own, and deliver new initiatives in the team.
- Drive innovation using the new features in Database software.
- Assist with the transition to cloud from a Database perspective.
- Identify, collect requirements, develop workflows to automate DBA processes.
- Analyse, develop and implement process to secure, reduce downtime and optimise Database performance.

Operational Management
- Provide DBA Support to Waystone Groups SQL Server Databases including:

- Maintaining and enhancing current procedures
- Upgrading and patching SQL Server from earlier versions
- Backup & Recovery of databases and process improvements
- Database performance assessment and optimisation
- Implement technologies related to Replication, Mirroring, Log Shipping, Partitioning
- Migration and data movement to Azure and AWS
- Working in the context of large (1TB+ databases) and associated performance challenges
- Supporting metadata packages (SSIS), for reporting purposes
- Assist in maintaining Data Quality and Data Integrity
- Ensure adequate capacity for database growth.
- Provide recommendations on systems configuration and operational infrastructure as required by management.
- Ensure best value for money is obtained from third party vendors by evaluating software tools as required.
- Effective monitoring, system status alerts and escalation where appropriate.
- Perform project and system health checks.
- Raise change controls for defects as required.
- Evaluate software suitability and viability to determine its usefulness in addressing the needs of Waystone.
- Performance tuning of databases, queries & reports.
- Allocating system storage and planning future storage requirements for the database systems.
- User access creation, monitoring, and maintenance of system security.
- Documentation of procedures and processes.
- Implement and Review Disaster Recovery strategy.
- Participate in after hours and weekend support.

People Leadership
- Provide training to the IT support teams on supported tools and environments.
- Work collaboratively across the firm to achieve the Goals of the team / company.

Governance & Risk
- Help resolving Information Security Corrective actions.
- Develop and Maintain Documentation related to Standard Operations Procedures
- Raising security issues and breaches to Manager
- Report to Management of any issues that may impact the Business.
- Maintain awareness and champion ITIL best practices.
- Adhere to all Waystone Groups standards, policies, and procedures

**Experience & Personal Attributes**
- Minimum 3+ years’ experience working with large SQL Server Database
- Sound knowledge of database architecture, integration issues, third party reporting and data extraction tools.
- Experience of working in Azure Cloud with MS SQL Server - PaaS and IaaS
- Experience of working in AWS Cloud with MS SQL Server - PaaS and IaaS
- Experience of working with automation i.e. Infrastructure as code/Terraform/GitHub/Python/Jenkins etc.
- Hands on experience with Azure Data Factory
- Availability to provide after-hours support
- Availability to support the on-call rota
- Knowledge and understanding of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC)
- Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
- Experience in Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services, Analysis Services and SSIS
- Structured programming methodology, data analysis and design skills - T-SQL & SQL Knowledge
- Experience in implementing operational automation using scripts.
- Knowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
- Ability to work well under pressure and to balance competing priorities to deliver timely outcomes.
- Must have a strong team focus and be able to work with mínimal supervision.
- Experience with technical documentation and content management.
- Exposure to business contingency standards and acceptable practices that comply with statutory and audit requirements
