A toolmaker's job is to create precision tools, such as dies, jigs, and molds, to be used in manufacturing. They also maintain and repair the tools they create. Responsibilities
- **Create tools**Use engineering drawings to lay out designs on raw materials, then cut and shape them using machine tools
- **Maintain tools**Regularly inspect tools for wear and damage, and perform maintenance tasks like cleaning, lubricating, and adjusting
- **Repair tools**Diagnose and fix issues with tools, such as replacing worn parts
- **Work with materials**Use a variety of materials, including metals, alloys, plastics, and ceramics
- **Use computer programs**Use computer-aided design (CAD) to develop products and parts, and computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines to cut and shape materials

**Skills**:

- **Technical skills**: Knowledge of machining operations, blueprint reading, and IT processes
- **Mathematical skills**: Understanding of geometry, trigonometry, and algebra
- **Analytical skills**: Ability to collect, interpret, and analyze data
- **Communication skills**: Ability to communicate verbally and in writing
- **Problem-solving skills**: Ability to identify and solve problems
