Lead Climatologist

Location: Aluva / Remote (Hybrid)

Canary is building WeatherGuard AI , a next-generation Marine & Aviation Intelligence platform that fuses rainfall histories, radar, satellite, oceanographic, and aviation datasets with AI-driven forecasting.

We are seeking a Lead Climatologist to anchor the climatology and atmospheric science foundation of this system. The role can be structured as full-time or on a consultancy/advisory basis , depending on availability and mutual agreement.

• Data & Modeling
• Curate and analyze climate datasets (ERA5, CMIP6, IMERG, HYCOM, CMEMS, buoy & radar archives).
• Develop methodologies for QPE (Quantitative Precip Estimation) and QCE (Quantitative Current Estimation) .
• Guide assimilation of rainfall, currents, waves, and tide datasets into unified models.
• Forecasting & Validation
• Collaborate on design of AI-driven rainfall and ocean current forecasts .
• Establish skill metrics and validation frameworks against gauges and station networks.
• Support integration of aviation climatology (turbulence, wind shear, visibility indices).
• Domain Leadership
• Mentor the AI/ML team on climatological best practices.
• Advise on extreme events (monsoons, cyclones, storm surges, turbulence corridors).
• Represent WeatherGuard AI in collaborations with IMD, INCOIS, IITM, ECMWF, and other climate centers.
• Impact & Translation
• Translate scientific outputs into actionable insights for Navy, Ports, Aviation, and Disaster Management.
• Shape dashboards, tiles, and alerts to reflect climatological reliability.

• PhD/Master's in Climatology, Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Oceanography, or related field.
• 10+ years research or applied experience in climatology / weather modeling / marine or aviation meteorology.
• Proven expertise with datasets like ERA5, IMERG, CMIP, HYCOM, WaveWatch III.
• Knowledge of assimilation techniques (Kalman filters, variational assimilation).
• Strong coding skills in Python (xarray, netCDF4, numpy, matplotlib); GIS a plus.
• Track record of publications or operational contributions (IMD, INCOIS, IITM, WMO, ECMWF, or equivalent).

• Open to Full-time or Consultancy (Advisory) arrangements.
• Consultancy engagement may include:
• Monthly/quarterly advisory sessions.
• Review of data assimilation & forecast models.
• Validation of AI-driven outputs against climatological standards.
• Mentorship of AI/data science team.
• Short-term project-based consulting also possible for specific pilots (e.g., Navy, Ports, ATC).
