Senior Backend Engineer (Contract)

– Initial 3 Months, Immediate Start

Help shape the backend of a live, regulated financial platform being built across the Middle East. You’ll join a lean team where the frontend is further along than the backend and the goal is to catch up. This is a full-time contract role (initial 3 months, possible extension) focused on core features, transactions, and secure APIs all powering a product built for real customers and regulatory scrutiny.

The Role:

We're supporting a client looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own backend delivery in a TypeScript/AWS environment. Their codebase is live, but some areas need cleaning up and extending fast. You’ll work on financial workflows like KYC, servicing, and withdrawals building the APIs and systems that handle real money, with reliability and auditability built in.

What You’ll Be Doing:

  • Building and extending backend services using TypeScript/Node.js.
  • Writing transactional business logic for financial flows (e.g. onboarding, withdrawals).
  • Designing and maintaining PostgreSQL schemas, migrations, and queries.
  • Integrating with third-party APIs securely (OAuth2, JWT).
  • Improving existing systems for performance, reliability, and audit requirements.
  • Collaborating via GitHub and CI/CD workflows.

What You’ll Need to Succeed:

  • 5+ years of backend engineering experience, ideally in financial services.
  • Strong TypeScript/Node.js skills, productive from day one.
  • Hands-on with AWS Lambda and serverless patterns.
  • PostgreSQL experience, schema design, performance tuning, real-world queries.
  • Solid understanding of building secure, documented REST APIs.
  • Able to work independently and communicate clearly.

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with regulated systems (KYC, audit logs, compliance).
  • AWS Cognito and broader infrastructure exposure.
  • Terraform/IaC familiarity.
  • Understanding of polyglot environments as Kotlin may be introduced down the line.
