The role of an AS/400 Support Specialist is a vital one, requiring technical expertise and problem-solving skills to ensure the seamless operation of applications on IBM AS/400 systems. This position demands at least six years of experience in supporting such systems, with a strong focus on ensuring high uptime and availability.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Technical Architecture: Familiarize yourself with the system architecture diagram of the AS/400 application, including its interface mechanisms with upstream and downstream systems, as well as knowledge of protocols specific to the technology stack.
  • Environment Details: Document various AS/400 environments (e.g., Production, Pre-prod, Test, Dev) along with OS levels, database versions, and configurations for each environment.
  • Technologies Used: Possess expertise in COBOL, RPG programming, DB2 databases, CL commands, and communication protocols specific to AS/400, enabling effective integration and troubleshooting.
  • Code Review: Perform thorough walkthroughs of complex, critical, or error-prone COBOL, RPG code modules, documenting any customized routines and identifying potential areas for improvement.
  • Integration: Understand how the AS/400 application integrates with other systems, ensuring smooth data exchange and efficient system performance.
  • Monitoring Setup: Knowledge of current monitoring mechanisms, log directories, and housekeeping processes on AS/400 servers enables proactive issue resolution and maintenance.
  • Compliance Requirements: Identify applicable compliance and regulatory requirements for the AS/400 system, ensuring adherence to industry standards and best practices.

Proficiency in technical documentation, trouble-shooting techniques, and business acumen are essential for success in this role. Strong analytical skills, adaptability, and attention to detail are also key characteristics required.
