Piping Designer Job Overview

Directly performs work of designers and drafters, preparing layouts, study drawings and detailed construction drawings using 2D CAD software like SmartSketch, AutoCAD and MicroStation.

This role involves delivering work in compliance with approved design standards, design criteria and procedures to provide quality design, reliable/safe plant operation and construction economy.

Coordination is required to resolve problems and interpret drawings and documents.

Engineering scope changes are identified as required for project management.

Work progress input is provided as required for project and discipline use.

Key responsibilities include equipment layout design and development, system layout design including concept sketches and detailed layouts, reviewing and checking designs, drawings and data by other or by suppliers, preparation or review of engineering studies and reports, preparation or review of material quantity estimates and fully experienced use of 3D modelling software (SP3D, E3D, PDS etc).

Design documents of equipment manufacturers or subcontractors of a moderate degree of complexity are reviewed and comments and recommendations prepared.

Assistance is provided in preparation of forecasts, quantity take-offs and change orders.

Discipline roles on the project are understood and counterpart disciplines, supplier/client representatives and project field personnel contacted when directed to either gather or give information.

Requirements:

  • A recognized Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or scientific discipline.
  • Specialized courses in drafting, design and engineering practices, and CAD.
  • Extensive 5 to 12 years of experience in design and drafting as a Piping Layout Designer.

Knowledge and Skills:

Application knowledge of engineering and construction materials related to piping design responsibilities.

Industry and regulatory standards, design criteria and relevant codes knowledge.

Discipline Design Guides, mathematical formulae, and design calculations knowledge.

3D/2D drafting tools experience.
