Founding Head of Engineering

As a pioneering technologist, you'll spearhead the development of cutting-edge AI systems. Our company is an ambitious player in the prop commerce space, moving at a fast pace while prioritizing craft and pragmatism.

About this role
  • This is a highly autonomous IC position where you'll drive innovation through code and patterns, rather than adhering to calendars.
Your responsibilities
  • Design and implement AI-native services (prompt orchestration, retrieval, tool/function calling, streaming UX) with robust evaluation and guardrails.
  • Develop reliable ingestion/processing pipelines, storage, and delivery with strong observability and cost control.
  • Implement consent-driven flows, signed links/tokens, rate-limits, audit trails, and abuse prevention measures.
  • Ingest and normalize external data, model entities/relationships, and expose a clean query layer for apps and partners.
  • Deliver modern UIs and APIs for internal/external stakeholders, ensuring performance and reliability.
  • Establish a culture of logging/metrics/traces, automated testing, incident runbooks, and a controlled release cadence.
Requirements
  • 6-10+ years building production systems as the primary architect (titles < commits). Exceptional earlier-career architects welcome with proof.
  • Evidence of turning ambiguous product challenges into working software in days, not quarters.
  • Hands-on experience with general AI systems (retrieval, tools, streaming, evals) with real users — and lessons from failures.
  • Strong systems thinking: data models, consistency trade-offs, perf budgets, failure handling.
  • Security and privacy instincts: PII handling, consent, audit trails, regulatory awareness.
  • Excellent written communication: crisp documentation, READMEs, runbooks.
Career path & title
  • Start as Founding Head of Engineering (IC). As we scale, choose either:
  • Principal/Distinguished IC track (maximize technical leverage), or
  • CTO/VP Eng path once a team exists and needs management.
