The role of a perioperative surgical assistant is vital in the surgical team. They work directly with the surgeon within the sterile field, assisting during surgical procedures by preparing the operating room, managing surgical instruments, and ensuring a sterile environment.

Key Responsibilities:
• Prepare and arrange surgical instruments and equipment
• Check that all supplies are sterile and functional
• Set up the operating room according to the specific procedure
• Assist in patient preparation and draping
• Hand instruments and materials to the surgeon during surgery
• Maintain the sterile field and monitor for breaks in sterility
• Count sponges, instruments, and needles before and after surgery
• Anticipate surgeon's needs during the procedure
• Assist in the safe transfer of the patient from the operating table
• Account for all instruments and materials used
• Help clean and restock the operating room
• Document surgical details and any anomalies
