Medical Coding Specialist

As a medical coding specialist, you will play a critical role in the healthcare industry by ensuring accurate and consistent coding of patient records. Your expertise in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines will enable healthcare organizations to optimize reimbursement and improve patient outcomes.

  • Review patient medical records to assign diagnosis and procedure codes accurately.
  • Identify and code chronic conditions for Risk Adjustment/HCC coding purposes.
  • Perform chart audits to evaluate documentation sufficiencies and ensure they support code assignments.
  • Maintain accurate coded data according to payer/regulatory guidelines and internal compliance standards.
  • Resolve queries with providers or documentation authors when medical records are unclear or missing needed details.
  • Achieve productivity and accuracy targets set by the team/project.
  • Stay updated on coding changes, industry regulations, and certification requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing training and process improvement initiatives.
  • Support payment integrity and maintain confidentiality of patient data.

Required Qualifications:

  • Certification: CPC (Certified Professional Coder) and/or CRC (Certified Risk Adjustment Coder) from recognized bodies.
  • Educational background: Bachelor's degree preferably in Life Sciences.
  • Typically 1-3 years coding experience in U.S. healthcare/risk adjustment/multispecialty coding.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
  • Proficiency in ICD-10-CM, CPT, HCPCS, and other coding systems.
  • Good analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to work under deadlines.
  • Effective communication skills for interacting with providers, auditors, etc.
  • Comfortable using EHR/EMR tools and basic MS Office software.
