Job Summary

As a Senior Structural Designer at Black & Veatch, you will play a key role in leading engineering design efforts and providing technical guidance to other professionals. Your responsibilities will include modifying or creating deliverables, applying basic engineering principles, and ensuring compliance with established design practices and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, and company policies to ensure deliverables meet quality and regulatory requirements.
  • Review project requirements and determine the correct format and contents of required deliverables.

Quality / Continuous Improvement:

  • Apply the Black & Veatch Quality Program to deliverables to ensure consistency and accuracy.
  • Demonstrate personal accuracy and support continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Review design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with industry standards.

Engineering Production:

  • Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Begin to apply judgment and make decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation.
  • Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities, and estimates, and records.
  • Review the deliverables of others and provide feedback.

Project Coordination:

  • Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • Support field activities as needed.

Client Focus:

  • Foster a customer-centric approach by understanding the needs of internal and external clients.

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation, and Technology:

  • Proactively seek and share knowledge of the latest technologies and processes.
  • Apply judgment and make decisions with respect to deliverables and input interpretation.

People Management:

  • Assist with performance management, mentoring, and recognition.
  • Provide guidance to lesser-experienced engineering technicians.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Diploma or certificate preferred.
  • Associate degree in drafting or an engineering design-related technology preferred.
  • Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience.

  • Advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content.
  • Intermediate knowledge of other disciplines.
  • Basic knowledge of construction and constructability practices and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • All applicants must be able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including background checks, drug screens, and motor vehicle records searches.
