Senior Environmental Modeller

Role:

This is a high-profile opportunity for an accomplished environmental modeller with expertise in software development to contribute to our ambitious project. Collaborating closely with our Principal Scientist, you will be responsible for creating and refining complex models of agricultural ecosystems using advanced programming skills.

Your extensive experience in Python programming and proficiency in scientific libraries such as NumPy, SciPy, Pandas, scikit-learn, and GeoPandas will be essential in delivering accurate predictions of soil carbon levels and agricultural system interactions.

You will need to be adaptable, capable of working independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team comprising engineers, GIS specialists, soil scientists, quality managers, data analysts, and commercial experts.

Key Responsibilities:

Model Development:

  • Developing and maintaining plant growth models, soil organic carbon models, soil water models, mineral nitrogen models, and grazing models
  • Implementing and refining the integration between different model components to ensure seamless data flow

Technical Expertise:

  • Contributing to the development and maintenance of Bayesian data assimilation frameworks
  • Configuring, running, and extending existing model components, including LINTUL-5 (arable crops), LINGRA (grass), RothPC-N (soil organic carbon and nitrogen)
  • Evaluating and implementing machine learning and statistical models to enhance overall accuracy and predictive power

Collaboration & Communication:

  • Working closely with the Principal Scientist to translate scientific requirements into robust technical solutions
  • Providing programming expertise to support complex modelling challenges
  • Communicating technical modelling concepts and results to both technical and non-technical audiences, including partners and stakeholders

Requirements:

We are looking for individuals with:

  • Advanced programming skills in Python, with expertise in scientific libraries
  • Experience in developing and working with ecosystem models or related areas
  • Data science proficiency, including machine learning techniques and their application to environmental data
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and a rigorous approach to model development

Nice to Have:

  • Experience with Bayesian methods and data assimilation frameworks
  • Familiarity with soil carbon models (e.g., RothC) and crop growth models (e.g., LINTUL, WOFOST, DSSAT, APSIM)
  • Knowledge of nitrogen cycling and soil-plant-atmosphere interactions
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms for large-scale data processing
