Key Skills for a Career in Mainframe Development

Mainframe development is an exciting and rewarding field that requires specialized skills and expertise. As a developer working on mainframe systems, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining large-scale applications that are critical to the operation of businesses.

To succeed in this role, you will need to possess a strong understanding of COBOL, VSAM, DB2, JCL, Eztrieve, SAS, CA-7, and Assembly language programming languages. You should also have hands-on experience with CICS, MQs, and CICS WebService Integration with midrange platforms.

In addition to technical skills, you will need to have excellent problem-solving and analytical skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team environment. You should also be proficient in code quality, code review, static analysis, and unit test tools, as well as Build, CI pipeline management tools, including designing and executing CI/CD workflows.

Job Responsibilities:
  • Maintain Critical Mainframe Applications: Support and maintain critical mainframe applications for mortgage and vehicle servicing
  • Execute Application Development: Execute application development, enhancements, and issue resolution
  • Collaborate with Partners: Collaborate with CIO partners to understand goals and provide appropriate technology solutions
  • Ensure Code Quality: Ensure code quality through reviews and unit testing
  • Manage Build, CI Pipeline Tools: Manage Build, CI pipeline tools and design end-to-end CI/CD workflows
Requirements:
  • Educational Background: Graduation in Computer Science or related field
  • Technical Experience: 6-8 years of development experience with COBOL, VSAM, DB2, JCL, Eztrieve, SAS, CA-7, and Assembly language
  • CICS Expertise: 6 years of hands-on experience in CICS
  • MQs and CICS WebService Integration: 6 years of experience with setting up MQs and CICS WebService Integration with midrange platforms
  • Code Quality and Management Tools: 6 years of experience with code quality, code review, static analysis, and unit test tools
  • Build, CI Pipeline Management Tools: Experience in Build, CI pipeline management tools, including designing and executing CI/CD workflows
  • Endevor or ISPW Code Management Tools: 6 years of experience with Endevor or ISPW code management tools
  • Agile Project Management Methodologies: Experience with Agile project management methodologies and tools like JIRA
