Job Description

We are seeking a seasoned Privacy and Data Protection Expert to join our team. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of global data protection and privacy laws, with a strong emphasis on U.S. state and federal student data privacy laws and best practices.

The successful candidate will provide strategic legal guidance on privacy and data protection issues, focusing on student data privacy under relevant U.S. federal and state laws, international laws, compliance obligations, AI, and data privacy in contracts.

  • Supports development and implementation of global data protection and privacy program in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Collaborates with stakeholders, providing subject matter expertise, advice, and training related to data protection legal and compliance obligations.
  • Monitors compliance with data protection and privacy policies, processes, and procedures, raising awareness and promoting best practices through effective training and guidance.
  • Assists with data governance and compliance efforts, including preparing and overseeing Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs), Data Sharing Agreements (DSAs), and other data protection and privacy compliance documentation.
  • Provides subject matter expertise on AI governance and compliance efforts, advising on appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect and safeguard personal data, especially student data.
  • Supports customer conversations on data protection, privacy, and AI, assisting with Company vendor contract diligence.
Required Skills and Qualifications

Key Responsibilities:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of global data protection and privacy laws, with a strong emphasis on U.S. state and federal student data privacy laws and best practices.
  • Expertise in advising on complex data protection and privacy matters, particularly related to FERPA, COPPA, GDPR, etc.
  • Ability to work cross-functionally, establishing effective solutions efficiently and amicably;
  • Builds trust, emphasised collaboration and communication, and serves as a connector between business and legal;
  • Translates legal advice into actionable guidance for stakeholders, often within prescribed timelines;
  • Applies risk-balanced, practical legal guidance to complex data protection and privacy questions, demonstrating creative problem-solving skills and agility in an evolving environment.
