At Canonical, we are seeking a seasoned Software Engineering Manager to lead technical teams in delivering and maintaining the Ubuntu Linux distribution.

About the Role

This is an exceptional opportunity for an experienced manager or technical lead to take on a challenging role that involves leading distributed teams of software engineers in various aspects of Linux kernel delivery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for guiding their team to deliver high-quality results, while also ensuring that they have the necessary skills and resources to succeed.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a team of software engineers in delivering and maintaining the Ubuntu Linux distribution.
  • Take ownership of specific aspects of the distribution, including working with silicon or cloud partners to implement optimized kernels.
  • Ensure the distribution is able to run on a wide range of hardware platforms.
  • Mitigate security threats and exploits to the Linux kernel.
  • Develop and execute stringent quality control standards expected by the user community.
Requirements
  • Significant experience in C programming, with Python, Golang, or other similar languages also highly regarded.
  • Substantial knowledge of operating system kernel internals and concepts, Linux highly regarded but not essential.
  • Demonstrated experience managing or leading a team of software engineers.
  • Ability to coordinate between multiple teams to achieve common goals.
  • Familiarity with version control practices, ideally with git.
  • Prior experience developing with software packaging formats, direct Ubuntu/Debian/Snap experience highly regarded.
  • Professional written and spoken English with excellent presentation skills.
