Job Title: Senior Marine Engineer

About the Role

We are seeking a seasoned professional to join our team as a Senior Marine Engineer. As a key member of our engineering team, you will play a critical role in designing and developing digital solutions for large container ships.

  • You will work closely with data scientists to build digital twins of container vessels, focusing on fuel consumption curves, vessel hydrodynamic performance models, and predictive models for parametric and synchronous rolling.
  • Using your expertise in naval architecture, you will help develop solutions for diagnosing hull fouling margins, engine power decomposition, and other related challenges.
  • You will lead project teams in understanding business requirements, translating them into actionable tasks, and guiding the development of impactful solutions.
Responsibilities
  • Analyze container ship operations data (historical, noon reports, EEXI reports, HF data)
  • Help conceptualize building digital twins of large container vessels (new and old ships in the fleet)
  • Identify relevant data needed to build container ship digital twins
  • Guide data scientists with domain inputs for building digital twins
  • Build and guide digital twin models, including fuel performance curves, vessel hydrodynamic stability, safety thresholds, and other models as needed
  • Model the effects of windage, vessel speed, drift, trim, heel, hull condition, propeller condition, engine condition, waves impact, wind impact, currents impact, and other parameters affecting fuel consumption
  • Derive parameters like trim, metacentric height, windage from various sources of base data
  • Develop tactical solutions for avoiding parametric and synchronous rolling, including alerting concerned parties with recommendations
  • Share vessel digital twin models for weather re-routing where necessary
  • Develop AI/ML solutions that recommend vessel speed, overconsumption alerts, fouling margin, etc
  • Visualize vessel digital twins for end-users if necessary
  • Scan and recommend process improvements, statutory guidelines, updates, benchmarking in areas mentioned above
Required Skills and Qualifications
  • At least 12-20 years of experience in naval architecture – ship design, vessel digital twin, fuel performance curves, etc
  • Hands-on experience in conceptualizing and building container vessel fuel consumption curves and other ship hydrodynamic performance models
  • Experience in building or running solutions like vessel digital twin, vessel hydrodynamic simulation, etc
  • Excellent appreciation and/or experience of data science subjects – simulation, optimization, ML models, etc
  • Strong consulting skills – leadership in uncertain and ambiguous situations, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
  • Excellent communication skills – spoken, written, and client-facing roles
  • Ability to guide teams on developing analytics solution blueprints to client problems balancing business context and technical details
  • Ability to analyze pros-and-cons of different analytic options in the context of multiple business problems and articulate such choices to technical and business audiences
  • Ability to build compelling stories from data/model outputs to convey insights to business stakeholders and drive acceptance & adoption of recommended actions
  • Confident in communicating with Director/VP-level stakeholders and demonstrate executive presence in interactions with CXO-level stakeholders
