Music Educator Role

About Lady Andal House of Children is a special school in Chennai that provides education and vocational training for children and adults with Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Learning Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities, and Down Syndrome. Job Description:

The ideal candidate has expertise in designing music lessons for students with varying abilities, including autism, physical disabilities, learning difficulties, or emotional/behavioural challenges.

The Music Teacher should have training in music therapy or knowledge of therapeutic music practices and experience with communication aids. A person with strong interpersonal skills, patience, creativity, and a positive attitude is our ideal candidate.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and Deliver Lessons: Design and implement music lessons that accommodate various learning styles and abilities.
  • Use Adaptive Techniques: Utilise assistive technologies, visual aids, instruments, and alternative communication methods to support student participation.
  • Encourage Expression and Communication: Promote music as a means of self-expression, communication, and emotional regulation.
  • Therapeutic Integration: Collaborate with occupational therapists, speech therapists, and other specialists to integrate therapeutic goals into musical activities.
  • Assessment and Reporting: Assess student progress using tailored benchmarks; maintain accurate records and contribute to IEPs (Individualised Education Programs).
  • Classroom Management: Maintain a safe, structured, and encouraging classroom environment; manage behaviour sensitively in line with the school's positive behaviour support policies.
  • Enrichment and Events: Organise performances, music therapy sessions, and school-wide musical events to showcase students' abilities.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • Certification: Bachelor's or Master's or P.G Diploma in Carnatic/Hindustani Music, Certificate course in Music Therapy (preferred)
  • Teaching Experience: 3 to 7 years of working with children in a mainstream school/Special school
  • Special Education Expertise: Teaching qualification or experience in special education (Preferred)
  • Inclusive Teaching Strategies: Knowledge of inclusive teaching strategies and adaptive music education
  • Musical Ability: Ability to play an instrument and facilitate group music singing 
  • Linguistic Proficiency: Mastery of Light songs and Bhajans in Tamil
  • Language Skill: Fluency in Tamil language
  • Communication Aid Experience: Training in music therapy or knowledge of therapeutic music practices
  • Interpersonal Skills: Experience with communication aids
  • Teamwork Ability: Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Positive Attitude: Patience, creativity, and a positive attitude
