Job Description: A Head of Department (HOD) for a Mining Laboratory oversees laboratory operations, manages a team of technicians, and ensures accurate analysis of mineral samples to support mining operations, including quality control, resource assessment, and environmental compliance. Key responsibilities include managing staff, overseeing daily lab activities, developing and implementing testing methods, maintaining equipment, adhering to safety protocols, and providing critical scientific insights to mining engineers and geologists. Key Responsibilities Team Leadership:Manage, train, and develop a team of laboratory technicians and assistants. Operational Management:Oversee the day-to-day running of the laboratory, ensuring efficiency and productivity. Quality Control:Ensure the accuracy and reliability of all tests and analyses performed on mineral and ore samples. Sample Analysis:Direct and conduct chemical, physical, and metallurgical tests on samples to determine quality and composition for processing. Method Development:Assist in developing and implementing new testing methods and standard operating procedures (SOPs). Equipment Management:Ensure all laboratory equipment is calibrated, maintained, and functioning correctly. Safety & Compliance:Enforce strict safety protocols and ensure the laboratory adheres to environmental and industry standards. Data Reporting:Oversee the accurate recording, analysis, and reporting of test data to support operational decisions. Collaboration:Work closely with mining engineers, geologists, and other teams to provide essential data and insights. Qualifications & Skills Education:Typically requires a strong background in a relevant scientific field, such as chemistry, metallurgy, or geological sciences. Experience:Significant hands-on experience in a laboratory setting, preferably within the mining or metallurgical industry. Technical Skills:Proficiency in operating specialized laboratory equipment and performing advanced analyses. Leadership & Management:Proven ability to manage and motivate a team. Organizational Skills:Strong ability to organize work, manage inventory, and maintain detailed records. Problem-Solving:The ability to troubleshoot technical issues and find practical solutions. Communication:Excellent communication skills to convey technical information and results effectively. Safety Awareness:A strong commitment to and knowledge of health and safety regulations.
