Job Profile: Head - Embedded Systems


Role Summary:

The Head for Embedded Systems is responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of firmware/software for embedded systems, ensuring seamless integration of hardware and software components. This leadership role involves managing a team of engineers, working cross-functionally with hardware, software, and product teams, and driving innovation in embedded solutions for various applications such as IoT, automotive, medical devices, and industrial systems.

Key Responsibilities:

1.Leadership & Team Management:

  • Lead and mentor a team of embedded engineers, promoting a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
  • Develop team capabilities through training, mentorship, and hiring of top talent.
  • Set goals and KPIs for the team, ensuring alignment with overall company objectives.

2.Firmware Development:

  • Oversee the design, development, and testing of embedded firmware for real-time applications.
  • Ensure development processes adhere to industry standards, including safety and security guidelines (e.g., MISRA, IEC 62304).

3.Embedded Linux Development:

  • Oversee the customization of the Linux kernel for embedded hardware, kernel module development and patches for specific hardware platforms.
  • Lead the development and integration of custom device drivers for hardware components (e.g., GPIO, I2C, SPI, USB, Ethernet). Ensure compatibility and optimization for the product’s hardware specifications.
  • Manage BSP development for custom boards, ensuring a seamless integration of Linux with the hardware platform, including bootloaders (U-Boot) and kernel configuration.
  • Customize and optimize embedded Linux filesystems (e.g., Yocto, Buildroot, or OpenWRT). Manage package dependencies, security patches, and build automation pipelines for embedded systems.


4.Project Management:

  • Manage the embedded development lifecycle, from concept to production, ensuring that timelines, budgets, and quality expectations are met.
  • Prioritize projects and allocate resources efficiently across multiple teams and projects.
  • Act as the primary technical point of contact for cross-functional teams including hardware, software, product management, and quality assurance.

5.Technical Expertise:

  • Drive technical decision-making for architecture, design, and implementation of embedded solutions.
  • Ensure robust testing methodologies and tools are used to validate firmware, including unit tests, integration tests, and hardware-in-the-loop simulations.

6.Quality Assurance & Compliance:

  • Ensure all firmware complies with relevant safety, security, and quality standards.
  • Implement best practices for version control, documentation, and traceability.
  • Support certification efforts (e.g., CE, FCC) for products that require regulatory approval.

7.Cross-Department Collaboration:

  • Work closely with product management, hardware, and software teams to align firmware development with business goals and product roadmaps.
  • Engage in pre-sales activities to understand the project requirements, provide technical consultation, prepare competitive proposals to enable business wins.

8.Innovation & Strategy:

  • Drive innovation in firmware development, leveraging the latest technologies in embedded systems.
  • Define the long-term strategy for embedded firmware development within the organization, ensuring the team is poised to meet future challenges and opportunities.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience: 10+ years of experience in embedded systems and firmware development, with at least 4 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Technical Expertise:
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, C++ for microcontrollers and processors.
  • Strong understanding of embedded operating systems (e.g., RTOS) and real-time system design.
  • Experience with communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, CAN, Ethernet) and hardware interfaces.
  • Deep knowledge of Embedded Linux development, kernel customization, driver development, and BSP creation.
  • Expertise in Yocto Project, Buildroot, or other Linux build systems.
  • Familiarity with cross-compilation tools, system configuration, and debugging in an embedded Linux environment.
  • Familiarity with debugging tools (e.g., oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, in-circuit emulators).
  • Knowledge of low-power design techniques and hardware/software co-design.
  • Leadership: Proven ability to lead a technical team, manage projects, and drive results.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex embedded systems.
  • Communication: Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with stakeholders across the organization.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in industries such as automotive, IoT, consumer electronics, or medical devices.
  • Familiarity with machine learning or AI for edge devices.
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity practices for embedded systems.
