Job Description
A Chronicle Heritage GIS Specialist plays a pivotal role in the planning, fieldwork and reporting phases of archaeological projects, contributing to the organization and presentation of heritage data through systematic GIS methods. Your expertise in data management, GIS software tools and map presentation will directly contribute to our firm's mission of uncovering and preserving historical and cultural heritage.

Responsibilities
Generic
Collaborate with archaeologists, field supervisors, and other team members to prepare for and support archaeological fieldwork tailored to specific project objectives and Chronicle Heritage standards.
Utilize Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software and field survey data to map survey boundaries, site locations, and archaeological datasets, providing comprehensive visual representations for analysis and reporting.
Support field teams with training, guidance and technical support.
Preparing and revising field data collection products, tailored to match specific project goals.
Analyze spatial data to identify patterns, trends, and areas of archaeological significance.
Assist in the preparation of detailed technical reports, including map figures, site descriptions, artifact analyses, photographs, and other relevant documentation.
Maintain a high standard of field safety practices and adhere to all environmental and cultural resource laws and regulations during survey activities.
Participate in training sessions, workshops, and skill development opportunities to stay current with evolving techniques and technologies.
GIS Technical
Work with Google Earth, ESRI ArcGIS Pro 3.x, ArcGIS Online and ArcGIS Enterprise, Survey 123, and Field Maps for GIS data processing as required
Import/export shapefiles, tables, and other spatial data as requested.
Manipulation and editing of various data types and sources (KML, shapefiles, feature datasets).
Organization of spatial data with the use of geodatabases and feature layers.
Georeferencing and digitization of raster images.
Digitization and editing of archaeological datasets to ensure proper documentation of findings and adherence to established protocols.
Preparing and revising report figures.
Adherence to agency-specific requirements within Chronicle Heritage branding guidelines.
Use of Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, SharePoint, and Outlook.
Other duties assigned by manager/project lead.
Qualifications and Requirements
Bachelor's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
Proven experience of archaeological fieldwork and understanding of single-context stratigraphic excavation to enable remote field support.
Proficiency in using GIS particularly through ESRI ArcPro 3.x, Google Earth, and preferably ArcGIS Online.
Proficiency in using spreadsheets and attribute tables to analyze and query datasets.
Proficiency in field map presentation.
Familiarity with archaeological documentation standards and best practices, ensuring accurate and organized recordkeeping.
Strong analytical skills, enabling the interpretation of survey data and the identification of archaeological patterns from a variety of sources.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for collaborating with team members and contributing to comprehensive reports.
Attention to detail and a methodical approach to archaeological GIS work, ensuring precision in data collection and processing.
Flexibility to travel and work on-site in different locations as required by project assignments – please note this is expected to be a primarily remote position with minimal expectation of travel.
Physical and Mental Requirements and Work Environment
Cognitive ability to use maps, survey data systems, and complex datasets
Vision is required to observe, record notes on observations, and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text)
Mental requirements include ability to organize one’s own work or that of team members; ability to recognize, observe, and analyze scientific data; and the ability to perform calculations
