Duties

  • User-centered problem solving: 30% of the time
  • Audience
  • Gather real data on the potential customers of the product by way of user research & interviews.
  • Create personas of groups of the target audience that offer a better understanding of who you are designing for.
  • Derive the list of jobs the customers would want the product to do. These could be functional and/or aspirational tasks. Tools: Personas, Jobs to be done, Value Proposition Canvas
  • Problem Framing
  • Framing the problem correctly is key to ensuring that the design successfully solves that problem.
  • Problems are rarely as simple as they appear and will have to be dug further by focusing on specific user personas and their needs. Tools: The Five Whys
  • Idea Generation
  • Once it is understood what and whose problems you are attempting to solve, generate enough divergent ideas to solve the user and business problems.
  • This needs to be done in an intentional, structured and collaborative manner.
  • Pick the ideas that have the biggest opportunity to succeed, for execution.


2) User experience and interface design: 30% of the time

  • User experience (UX) design and user flows
  • Illustrate the journeys users will take within the product to achieve their goals.
  • For complex flows, layout different paths a user could choose.
  • Anticipate and handle edge-cases, potential errors and other aspects users may run into.
  • Map out what is to be built in a step-by-step flow as low fidelity sketches to see the whole picture of the user's experience and take into account the information architecture of how the screens are structured.
  • As a next step, create clickable or interactive prototypes to get earlier feedback from teammates and customers. Tools: figma, invision, marvel
  • Branding, Visual and User interface (UI) design
  • Establish the look and feel for various interfaces including mobile apps, web apps and wearables by working within the brand guidelines.
  • Ensure the visual consistency (including colors, sizes, positions, typography etc.) of the layouts being designed are consistent and they reinforce the brand's voice through its visual touchpoints.
  • Design icons & infographics.
  • Guide the users and inspire a bit of delight in the product by designing
  • Micro-Interactions or Micro-animations.
  • Design content for the user interface that give clear directions to the user. Design for VUI. Tools: Sketch, Adobe suite


3) Collaboration & Communication: 30% of the time

  • Feedback and alignment
  • Proactively organize sessions to take feedback from colleagues, customers & end users.
  • Navigate through the feedback you receive and align with your team on what is important.
  • Collaborating with engineering
  • Work closely with the development team from the beginning and take their feedback on potential technical constraints.
  • Give presentations & walkthroughs of the interactive high fidelity prototypes to the development team at regular junctures so that there are no surprises that popup during coding.
  • Ensure proper handoff of design deliverables and assets to the development team.
  • Provide feedback on Coding Sprint deliverables and releases to ensure what gets built mirrors what you designed.


4) Learn & Grow: 10% of the time

  • Read, watch, experiment with latest trends & advancements.
  • Present to the team what could be incorporated in our processes, how & why.
  • Convert these presentations to blogs & open it up to the community.
