Why this job matters

The Business Operations Manager drives capacity planning, resource management and programme increment planning, empowering demand & capacity management, ensuring alignment with strategy and BT Group objectives by way of the Medium-Term Plan for specific capabilities in Data & AI (Core Engineering, COEs, Customer Facing Units)

The ideal candidates will have a strong background in business operations, strategic planning, and financial management.

Key areas of impact:

1. Strategic Planning: Translates data and AI’s strategies into sustainable plans, ensuring strategic objectives are met

2. Resource Planning: Drives organizational transformation by making it more data-driven, agile, and competitive to plan, estimate and maintain capacity in line with demand.

3. Cost Transformation: Ensures that investments in data and AI yield tangible business results while making the team more productive and efficient year on year

4. Operational Performance: Responsible for driving and achieving Data & AI’s annual performance objectives while creating long term improvements in the process. In addition to this, accountable for unit level OKRs, risks, unit governance and financials


What you’ll be doing

1. Strategic Workforce Planning:

• Implement strategic workforce plans to ensure the organization has the right talent to meet current and future business needs.

• Analyze workforce trends and data to forecast demand and identify gaps in skills and capacity.

2. Resource Management:

• Implement tools and processes to track and manage resource utilization and capacity.

3. Demand and Capacity Mapping:

• Conduct demand and capacity mapping to ensure alignment between business needs and available resources.

• Identify and mitigate risks related to resource shortages or surpluses.

4. Driving Unit-Level OKRs and Metrics:

• Establish and monitor key performance metrics to measure progress against OKRs.

• Provide regular reports and insights to senior leadership on OKR attainment and performance metrics.

5. Financial Management and Metrics:

• Develop and manage budgets for business operations, ensuring financial accountability and alignment with strategic goals.

• Track and report on key financial metrics, including cost management, ROI, and profitability.

6. Unit-Level Risk Management:

• Identify, assess, and manage risks at the unit level to minimize impact on business operations.

7. Unit Governance:

• Establish and maintain governance frameworks to ensure compliance with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.

• Implement processes and controls to maintain high standards of operational integrity and accountability.

• Conduct regular reviews to ensure adherence to governance standards and identify areas for improvement.

Skills you will need to suceed

1. Strategic Thinking: The ability to think strategically and align data and AI initiatives with the organisation's overall goals and objectives.

2. Resource Management: Skill in managing budgets, human resources, and technology resources effectively to maximize ROI.

3. Risk Management: The ability to identify and mitigate risks related to data privacy, security, compliance, and project delivery. Proficiency in business intelligence, risk management, and resource management tools.

4. Performance Metrics: Expertise in defining and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure the impact and effectiveness of data and AI initiatives.

5. Operational Awareness: Strong understanding of risk management and governance frameworks with excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.

6. Financial Awareness: Financial acumen and experience managing budgets and financial performance.


Experience you would be expected to have

• Bachelor's degree

• Experience bridging technical and business teams to drive successful operations and demand management

• Experience of program management and business development or business operations

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in technical product management, program management or engineering

• Experience owning/driving roadmap strategy and definition

• History with cloud infrastructure, data center program/project management.

• Familiarity with P&L statements and long-term cash flow projections/NPV.
