Job Description:
The position is for additive manufacturing process simulation, particularly thermo-physics, heat transfer, and material melting-solidification. The aim is to predict defects and microstructures in processes like alloy powder melting and solidification, powder bed fusion, directed energy deposition, and laser-material interaction. Prior understanding and additional scientific development efforts may be required to integrate thermo-mechanical models, material models, data-driven algorithms, and reduced-order modelling for process parameter optimisation. The work will involve detailed simulations using multiphysics finite element software tools such as Comsol. The aim is the development of model-based and data-driven numerical schemes to aid in process diagnostic and process parameter optimisation. The work will have to be carried out with close collaboration in a team for simulation verification and validation using physical tests and measurement data.

Qualification and Eligibility:
MTech/PhD with a minimum 2 years of experience with finite element simulations related to some of the following: heat-transfer, material constitutive modelling, thermo-mechanical deformation, melting and solidification or material micro- and nanostructure or molecular dynamics-related fundamental simulations. Specific modelling and simulation experiences with relevant additive manufacturing processes will be an added advantage. Additional experience in material modelling tools, including phase-field, melt flow, and particle/molecular dynamics, will be an added advantage.
Minimum 2 years of experience and a medium to high level of proficiency is required with Comsol Multiphysics software or equivalent tools, with the ability to quickly implement mathematical models in simulation schemes and post-process simulation data. Experience with parametric simulation and optimisation methods will be an added advantage.
Minimum 2 years of experience and a medium to high level of proficiency are required with Matlab coding and data visualisation, as well as proficiency with standard tools like Microsoft Excel-based data processing and visualisation. Experience with Matlab, Excel or other programming-based user-interface design and implementation will be an added advantage.

Role & Responsibilities :
Roles
The Project Associate will be part of a project team and will perform specific project tasks as per objectives and milestones. The project is research and development in nature, having a critical impact potential on manufacturing process engineering and new tool development.
The primary role is of a simulation specialist who will implement a modelling scheme in software, simulate specific details of the additive manufacturing process, validate the simulation, generate parametric simulation data for analysis, and further optimise processing outcomes through simulations.

Responsibilities associated with the role
As a team member, the work-related detailed methods and approaches will have to be discussed with concerned team members and details will have to be developed systematically by understanding the problems, requirements, scope and objectives.
Perform project-specific tasks by understanding objectives, background, scope and requirements. Capture all details in documents according to work guidelines and procedures which will be provided.
Carry out the latest literature search and identify key factors associated with the powder-bed fusion process, modelling and simulation schemes using finite element software, material modelling and data-driven modelling.
Develop an understanding of mathematical models for process simulation and finite element-based computational implementation details.
Implement/improve finite element modelling set-up in Comsol software and other tools/codes as required.
Simulate and validate basic test cases using literature and test and measurement data by developing a specific verification and validation plan.
Carry out parametric simulations as per project requirements. Develop a parametric optimisation scheme using simulation data and Matlab code.
Work closely with team members to develop modelling and computational algorithms to correlate experimental data and process optimisation as required to meet the project objectives.
Participate in work progress reviews, consistently demonstrate relevant learning, conceptual and application development, and specific outcomes.

Experience, skills and basic technical understanding required
To meet project-specific tasks, the background qualification and skills described in the eligibility criteria will apply.
Ability to understand mathematical models, work with equations, finite element method-related theory and best practices are essential.
Proficiency in Comsol Multiphysics software is required.
Consistently working with finite element software tools is mandatory and will be the primary focus.
Ability to work with finite element data and parametric analysis visualization; additional analytical calculations using Matlab is required.

The position is contractual in nature. The position may be renewed on an annual or term basis based on performance and project position role.

Work timing: The position requires in-person presence in the workplace during weekdays and time-to-time additional in-person or virtual presence to meet timely completion of work and attend meetings and work progress reviews as required.
