Role PurposeSolaris Administrator (L2) - IT Operations & Infrastructure

Key Responsibilities / AccountabilitiesWe are looking for a skilled Solaris Administrator (L2) to join our IT operations team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for managing and supporting Solaris-based systems, ensuring their availability, security, and performance. The role requires hands-on experience with system configuration, patch management, and providing incident resolution in a production environment.

This is an operational role where you will be responsible for maintaining the health of Solaris systems, addressing user issues, and ensuring smooth day-to-day operations. The position is best suited for someone who is experienced with Solaris administration at an intermediate level and enjoys problem-solving.

Major Duties & Responsibilities:

Solaris System Administration:

Administer and maintain Solaris systems, ensuring they run efficiently and securely.

Perform routine updates, patches, and upgrades for Solaris operating systems.

Monitor system performance and ensure optimal configuration of servers.

Troubleshoot hardware and software issues related to Solaris systems.

Implement and manage file systems, including NFS and ZFS.

Configure and maintain users, groups, and system security settings.

Assist in disaster recovery and backup tasks to ensure data integrity.

Automation and Scripting:

Develop and maintain scripts for system automation using shell scripting (Bash, KornShell).

Automate repetitive tasks such as server provisioning, system monitoring, and configuration management.

Security Management:

Implement security policies to secure Solaris servers and ensure compliance with internal and external standards.

Configure and manage firewalls, access control, and patching to secure Solaris-based environments.

Perform regular vulnerability assessments and security audits.

Incident Management and Troubleshooting:

Respond to incidents and manage the resolution of issues related to system performance, connectivity, and security.

Conduct root cause analysis to resolve system failures and implement preventive measures.

Provide technical support for Solaris-related issues, both internally and for customers.

Performance Tuning and Optimization:

Conduct system performance tuning to optimize CPU, memory, disk, and network performance.

Implement load balancing, clustering, and high-availability solutions to ensure business continuity.

Evaluate hardware and system requirements to ensure they meet current and future demands.

Collaboration and Documentation:

Collaborate with other teams (networking, security, and DevOps) to resolve Solaris-related issues and enhance system performance.

Maintain detailed system documentation for configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.

Create and update system deployment procedures to ensure consistency and repeatability.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Technical Skills:

In-depth experience with Solaris OS (versions 9, 10, 11), including system installation, configuration, and maintenance.

Strong proficiency with system administration tools and utilities (e.g., Solaris Management Console, ZFS, NFS, LDAP).

Hands-on experience with Solaris kernel tuning, memory management, disk management, and performance optimization.

Solid understanding of networking (TCP/IP, DNS, NFS, etc.) and managing Solaris services (SMF, Solaris Zones).

Experience with virtualization (e.g., Oracle VM, Solaris Zones) and containerization technologies.

Knowledge of automation tools and scripting languages (Bash, KornShell) for system management.

Familiarity with cloud services and the integration of Solaris systems with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, etc.) is a plus.

Security Management:

Ability to implement security best practices in Solaris environments, including role-based access control (RBAC), firewall configurations, and user management.

Experience with vulnerability scanning, patching, and compliance reporting.

Troubleshooting & Problem-Solving Skills:

Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose hardware, software, and network-related issues.

Ability to analyze log files and system output to identify potential issues and resolve them in a timely manner.

Soft Skills:

Strong communication skills to collaborate with internal teams and provide technical support.

Good organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively.

Detail-oriented with an ability to document system changes, configurations, and troubleshooting steps clearly.

Preferred additional Skills and Abilities:

Experience with Oracle or other database management systems in Solaris environments.

Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure) and the integration of Solaris systems in cloud infrastructures.

Hands-on experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes) and DevOps tools (Jenkins, Git).

Knowledge of backup and recovery tools (e.g., Veritas NetBackup, Solaris Storage, etc.).

Familiarity with other operating systems such as Linux or AIX can be beneficial.

Qualifications and Experience

Following are the key skills and experience expected out of the candidate

Bachelors in Communications / Computer Science OR Software Engineering OR related technical degree OR Experience

2-4 years of experience in Solaris system administration, with hands-on experience in system maintenance, patching, troubleshooting, and security management.

Prior experience working in an operational or production environment is preferred.

Certifications

Oracle Solaris 10/11 Certified Administrator.

Certification in Linux (RHCE, LPIC) or other relevant system administration certifications is a plus.
