Position Summary
The Sr. Manager of Engineering is responsible for directly managing 6-10 developers of varying cohort levels. A successful candidate will drive his/her teams to delivering high quality software that achieves their business goals, as well as coaching individuals and ensuring they grow along their chosen career path. The role also requires strong interpersonal and communication skills as a good candidate will collaborate with multiple stakeholders both on and off team and help evangelize the use of the teams new services across the company.
Responsibilities May Include, But Are Not Limited To
Primary Function/ People Management/Performance Management
- Provide managerial oversight over a technical area comprised of 2-3 scrum teams and maintain working knowledge of the product-line for area of assignment
- Sets and monitors performance goals & objectives, including providing feedback through performance appraisals and day-to-day discussions
- Drive tri-annual release planning for teams within span of control; Contribute to the annual strategic planning process
- Identify and manage team-based risks and dependencies in partnership with product management and TPM as applicable
- Look across all teams under scope of control and identify systemic blockers, risks and dependencies
- Clarify roles and responsibilities for direct reports
- Attend daily stand-ups often enough to be abreast of common occurrences
- Nurture the aspects of the culture we wish to retain and help drive changes to positively affect employee engagement
- Advocate up the management chain in support of the accomplishments and challenges of your team
Driving Execution
- Ensure delivery of quality releases through management of direct reports; conduct code reviews as needed
- Act as the Scrum Master including determining team meeting cadence to ensure efficiency in scrum ceremonies and alignment in work allocation
- Provide guidance and troubleshoot as appropriate on complex technical issues until resolution
- Share the team vision and strategy to foster an understanding of the overall direction and the 'why' behind decisions.
Talent Development
- Hold ongoing career pathing discussions; encourage lateral development in addition to readiness for upward mobility
- Coach and mentor your own team; also act as a mentor for other junior members of staff (e.g. architecture and new technologies)
- Provide feedback to direct reports, on both an ad hoc and scheduled basis. Identifies strengths and development needs.
- Identify timeframe and readiness for promotion of direct reports; solicit cross-functional feedback in support of promotions and employee rewards
Building Effective Teams
- Identify hiring needs for the team; Determine level of expertise and experience for openings.
- Interview candidates and provide feedback to influence hiring decisions for open roles on their team
- Encourage those on your team to take risks and learn from mistakes; create a safe environment for them to fail
- Look for holistic opportunities for work and people improvements across entire team in addition to helping individuals succeed
Education, Experience, & Skills Required
- 3-5 years of leading multiple teams in a technical environment
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent
- Track record of developing employees both technically and professionally
- Previous experience working in an Agile environment preferred
- Significant software engineering skills, object-oriented programming and computer science experience
- Knowledge of at least one programming language such as: Javascript (nodejs), Java, C#, C++, Perl, or Python
- Working knowledge of AI/ML, LLM integrations, and enterprise cloud solutions
- Handled projects in Python-based AI development, LLM orchestration, cloud deployment, and enterprise AI integration.
