Job Description Job Title Assembly Supervisor Underground Mining Equipment Manufacturing Department Production / Assembly Reports To Assembly Manager Purpose of the Role The Assembly Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the assembly shop floor for mining equipment (underground mining machines/components). This includes supervising the assembly team, ensuring production targets and quality standards are met, enforcing safe work practices, and driving continuous improvement in the assembly process. Key Responsibilities - Supervise and coordinate daily activities of assembly operators and technicians, assigning tasks, monitoring performance and ensuring timely completion of work orders. - Develop, communicate and implement the build/assembly plan for weekly/monthly targets. - Ensure products/components meet design drawings, BOM (bill of materials), work instructions, and quality standards as specified. - Work closely with planning, quality, warehouse (materials), and maintenance teams to ensure smooth workflow, availability of parts, minimal downtime and coordination across functions. - Monitor production metrics: output, first pass yield (FPY), defects per unit (DPU), overall equipment effectiveness (OEE) where applicable. Take corrective actions when targets are not met. - Enforce and promote safe working environment, compliance with health, safety & environment (HSE) standards, housekeeping (5S) and manufacturing discipline. - Lead continuous improvement initiatives (Kaizen, Lean manufacturing, waste elimination) to improve efficiency, cost, delivery and quality. - Manage shift activities (if applicable) including handover, staffing, attendance, training and performance reviews of assembly team members. - Maintain documentation, records and reports related to production, quality, workmanship, maintenance, manpower productivity, and escalate issues to higher management as needed. Qualifications & Experience - Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering/ Diploma engineering with higher experience, Production Technology/ Automobile Engg. or similar discipline preferred. - Extensive experience (typically 5-8 years) in assembly production environment, of which at least 2-3 years in a supervisory role. (For heavy-equipment manufacturing, higher experience may be preferred) - Prior exposure to manufacturing of heavy equipment / mining equipment / underground equipment is a plus. - Strong familiarity with reading mechanical drawings, work instructions, BOMs, and ability to coordinate assembly operations accordingly. - Knowledge of Lean/Continuous Improvement tools (5S, Kaizen, TPM) and quality systems (ISO, IPC, API, etc) is an advantage. - Good leadership, communication and team-management skills; ability to motivate and develop team. - Familiarity with ERP/MRP systems, production scheduling, measurement of key production metrics and reporting. - Willingness to work in a manufacturing environment, handle shop-floor visibility, and possibly cover shifts including overtime if required. Key Competencies & Skills - Strong problem-solving mindset: able to identify bottlenecks, escalate or resolve issues proactively. - Focus on quality, precision, and uptimeespecially important for heavy-duty underground mining machinery where reliability is critical. - Safety and compliance orientation, ensuring zero harm environment in heavy manufacturing context. - Ability to plan, schedule, organize manpower and resources, adapt to changes in schedule or priorities. - Good interpersonal and communication skills for coordinating across functions and shifts. - Analytical mindset for tracking production KPIs, cost control, continuous improvement efforts. Working Conditions - The role is predominantly shop-floor based, with walking, standing for long periods and exposure to manufacturing noise, heavy parts, moving machinery. - Must adhere to personal protective equipment (PPE) usage, safety protocols in a heavy-equipment manufacturing environment. - May require coordination across shifts, weekend or overtime work depending on production demands. Performance Metrics - Assembly output vs target (units per shift/week). - Quality metrics: first pass yield, defect rate, rework rate. - Equipment and manpower utilisation, downtime minimisation. - On-time delivery of work orders. - Safety performance: incidents, near misses, housekeeping/5S. - Cost control: labour efficiency, material waste, scrap reduction. - Improvement initiatives implemented and impact realized (e.g., lead time reduction, cost savings). Career Path Successful candidates may progress to roles such as Assembly Manager / Production Manager, responsible for larger assembly areas, multiple shifts, or full manufacturing sections.
