The Senior Manager, Program Management, Environment Leader is a country-level role with environment compliance responsibilities across Amazon's operations in India. This role sets the strategic direction and oversees the execution of comprehensive environmental compliance programs spanning over 210+ sites in India. This involves navigating compliance requirements and driving adoption efforts across Amazon's facilities. The leader collaborates closely with various vendors and external auditors to establish an appropriate inspection framework and review mechanism through Austin. This ensures comprehensive compliance with the Air Act, Water Act, and Hazardous Waste Management regulations for five business units. The leader owns the Environment compliance (India VP-level goal), and is responsible for delivering output goals of (i) EPI - Environment Performance Index, (ii) WDR - Waste Diversion Rate, (iii) Hazardous Waste, along with fourteen input goals on environment and five Sustainability goals for India. The key stakeholders for this leader include the India Operations Regional Directors, Finance, Legal, Real Estate and Engineering, WHS, Public Policy, and Procurement teams. In total, the leader in this role needs to thoughtfully navigate a complex web of decision-making influence, carefully defining the right set of trade-offs between cost, compliance, and sustainability. This role is responsible for driving long-term sustainability efforts for India operations .The leader in this position is tasked with steering the new building selection process, making pivotal decisions with far-reaching implications for the organization. This involves overseeing comprehensive environmental assessments of potential new sites, including the selection of vendors and auditors to conduct soil, groundwater, and air quality sampling, and then providing directional inputs to influence the final site selection decisions based on these assessments. Externally, the role requires engaging with a range of government authorities such as state pollution control boards, state groundwater authorities, and municipal authorities. Beyond these internal and external stakeholders, this leader will also build strong partnerships with the Worldwide EAP Team and Worldwide Operations Sustainability Team to ensure effective adoption of global program initiatives. The leader in this role must be well-versed in a wide range of environmental regulations, including the Environmental Protection Act 1986, Air Act 1981, Water Act 1974, Hazardous Waste Management and Transboundary Rules, Manufacturing, Storage & Import of Hazardous Chemical Rules 1989, Factories Act 1948, Petroleum Act 1934, and Gas Cylinder Rules. This comprehensive understanding is critical, as the role oversees key initiatives related to permitting, licensing, inspections, and capability building. These efforts are part of the ECCR (Environment Compliance Conformance Risk) component of the Environment Performance Index (EPI) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) programs. Additionally, the leader is responsible for overseeing the implementation of Circular Economy and General Waste Management strategies across all of India's business units. This ensures the organization's commitment towards the goal of zero waste to landfill. The leader in this role will be responsible for leading a team of environment professionals. This individual must create and execute leadership development plans for their team members, communicate team expectations, provide frequent and appropriate feedback, and ensure they are executing to the core competencies of an Amazon environment professional. A key responsibility of this role is to identify relevant use cases and best practices from global businesses that can be adapted to inform Amazon's environmental strategies and compliance approaches within the Indian context. Ensuring environmental compliance is critical, as it involves preventing business disruptions and proactively mitigating risks. This requires designing processes that ensure accountability, and establishing monitoring mechanisms. Another key aspect is to develop scalable compliance frameworks, as well as setting up the appropriate standard operating procedures for effective execution.- Bachelor's degree in Science or a related field - Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in safety and/or environmental programs within manufacturing, production, service operations, or other relevant settings applicable to the role - Minimum 10 years of experience in people management and performance leadership - Experience managing Environmental Solutions and Sustainability - Understanding of Indian Environmental Laws (Air Act, Water Act, and Hazardous Waste Management regulations )- Experience implementing repeatable processes and driving automation or standardization - Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a related field required. - Experience in a fast paced, changing/growing organization. - Environment/ Sustainability - Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including comfort interfacing with site leaders - Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers.
