Pyrolysis Specialist

About Role

Alt Carbon is building high-quality carbon removal solutions with a focus on permanence, scale, and farmer-first impact. Alongside Enhanced Rock Weathering, we are developing biochar-based carbon credits by deploying industrial-scale pyrolysis systems. We are looking for a hands-on pyrolysis specialist to design, optimize, and operate biochar production processes at scale.

Key Responsibilities

- Design & Scale-Up: Contribute to plant design and commissioning, ensuring scalability from pilot to commercial capacity.
- Process Engineering: Optimize pyrolysis processes for yield, energy efficiency, and carbon stability.
- Technology Evaluation: Assess pyrolysis technologies, equipment vendors, and partners to select best-fit solutions.
- Operations & Safety: Establish SOPs, ensure compliance with safety standards, and troubleshoot operational issues.
- Data & MRV Support: Monitor process data to support carbon credit measurement, reporting, and verification.
- Innovation: Explore co-products (syngas, bio-oil) utilization and process improvements.
- On-Ground Execution: Be hands-on at sites, ensuring smooth day-to-day operations, troubleshooting, and quick decision-making.
- Team Building: Mentor engineers/technicians and create a high-performance operations team.

Requirements

- Bachelor's/Master's in Chemical, Mechanical, or Process Engineering (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of direct experience with pyrolysis, biomass conversion, or thermochemical processes.
- Proven track record with biochar production, syngas/bio-oil utilization
- Familiarity with plant operations, thermal systems, and safety standards.
- Experience with instrumentation, control systems, and process monitoring.
- Comfort working in field conditions and willingness to take full ownership of site execution.
- Strong problem-solving mindset; thrives in small teams where adaptability and initiative are essential.
