The Role As a Lead Software Engineer , you will bring technical excellence and leadership to guide a cross-functional squad to design, build, and deliver scalable, high-quality solutions. You will mentor engineers, drive architectural decisions, and ensure that JoVE’s products remain at the forefront of innovation in the EdTech and STEM research space. Responsibilities Lead and mentor engineers within your squad to deliver high quality engineering solutions. Drive the design and development of scalable, data-driven architectures, including APIs, microservices, and distributed systems. Ensure code quality and maintainability through adherence to software engineering principles (SOLID, DRY, SaaS multi-tenancy). Partner with Product Managers, UX Designers, and other stakeholders to deliver features and initiatives that meet customer needs. Champion Agile/Scrum practices, ensuring the squad is efficient, predictable, and continuously improving. Triage and resolve incidents, leading root cause investigations and implementing long-term fixes. Collaborate on cloud-native solutions (AWS serverless or container-based) to ensure scalability, security, and performance at production scale. Stay ahead of emerging technologies and propose solutions that enhance JoVE’s technical stack and product offerings. Requirements 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, with recent hands-on coding responsibilities. At lest 2 years of experience in a team leadership capacity. Expertise with modern web application frameworks (PHP, Node.js, Python, or similar). Deep knowledge of RESTful APIs, microservices, and distributed systems. Strong database expertise across SQL, NoSQL, in-memory, and distributed SQL (PostgreSQL, Redis, Cassandra, Elastic). Experience integrating with 3rd-party APIs and external frameworks. Expert-level understanding of cloud-native architectures (AWS preferred, serverless or containers). Strong grasp of software design principles (SOLID, DRY, SaaS multi-tenancy). Hands-on experience with Agile/Scrum, CI/CD, and automated testing. Proven ability to lead incident response and investigations. Self-driven, results oriented and thrives in a fast paced environment.
