About the Business Unit

TOI is India's largest and most influential news publisher in English. We inform and actively engage you to drive progress at a local and national level. We bring you the latest news, analysis and videos across current affairs, business, entertainment, sports, lifestyle and culture everyday.

About the Role

We're looking for a design leader who can balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution to transform how millions of Indians consume news daily. You'll inherit and lead an established design team while driving innovation through AI-native design practices.

Key Responsibilities

1-Strategic Leadership (50%)

2-Define and evolve the design vision for India's largest digital news platform

3-Partner with Product, Engineering, and Editorial teams to create user experiences that increase engagement and retention

4-Lead the transformation of the design team into an AI-native organization, leveraging cutting-edge design tools and methodologies

5-Establish design systems and processes that scale across web, mobile apps, social media, and newsletters

6-Drive data-informed design decisions through user research and analytics

7-Present design strategies and outcomes to senior leadership

8-Hands-on Design (50%)

9-Lead by example through direct involvement in high-impact design projects

10-Create and refine UI/UX designs for critical user journeys

11-Conduct and oversee user research to deeply understand our 10M+ daily users

12-Prototype and validate new concepts that enhance user engagement

13-Review and guide design work to maintain exceptional quality standards

What You'll Own

1-Complete design lifecycle from research to implementation across all digital platforms

2-Design team development, mentorship, and performance management

3-Cross-functional collaboration with Product, Tech, Editorial, and Marketing teams

4-Design operations including tools, processes, and best practices

5-Innovation pipeline for AI-powered design capabilities

What We're Looking For

Must-Have Qualifications

1-5-8 years of experience in digital product design, with at least 2-3 years in a leadership role

2-Proven track record in consumer-facing digital product companies (preferably content platforms, media, or high-traffic applications)

3-Strong portfolio demonstrating both UI/UX excellence and strategic design thinking

4-Expertise in modern design tools (Figma, Sketch, Adobe Creative Suite) and proficiency in AI-powered design tools

5-Experience conducting user research and translating insights into design solutions

6-Bachelor's degree in Design, HCI, or related field (Master's preferred)

Critical Skills

1-Exceptional visual design sense with deep understanding of typography, color theory, and layout principles

2-Strong UX thinking with ability to simplify complex information hierarchies

3-Data-driven mindset with experience in A/B testing and design metrics

4-Excellent communication skills to articulate design decisions to diverse stakeholders

5-Leadership experience in building and scaling design teams

6-Hands-on approach with ability to dive deep into design details when needed

What Would Make You Stand Out

1-Experience in news media or content-heavy digital platforms

2-Track record of designing for Indian users and understanding local user behaviors

3-Expertise in designing for multiple platforms with responsive and adaptive approaches

4-Knowledge of accessibility standards and inclusive design practices

5-Experience with motion design and micro-interactions

6-Published articles, talks, or thought leadership in design
