Job Description

What You'll Do

As a Tax Researcher for the Communications & Excise teams working in Pune, you will research on tax law, tax rates, and reporting and remittance requirements to keep Avalara products in compliance with jurisdictional tax laws. You will build tax data into our proprietary software and validate results pre-production. You will also periodically respond to telecommunications / Excise tax questions from our clients.

You will read and translate tax instructions, laws, and statutes. After which you will convert the information into detailed tax rates, scenarios, and profiles for determining tax in AvaTax Excise / Telecom product

You will be reporting to Sr Manager- Indirect Tax.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

- Research tax law, reporting, and remittance requirements to keep our tax products in compliance with country, state, county, and local jurisdiction tax laws
- Experience of tax determination for Motor Fuel, Sales and Use, Tobacco and other United States and Canadian tax types
- Collaborate with other Indirect Tax Researchers and provide peer review of their research and work product
- Monitor legislation, administrative decisions, and judicial decisions for changes in transaction taxes in assigned jurisdictional or topical areas
- Apply taxability changes to our software while providing concise documentation of the changes
- Based on tax research, validate results of test transactions pre-production
- Build productive working relationships with state, county, and city authorities

What You'll Need To Be Successful

- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, law, economics, or related field
- JD/LLM, or CPA/Chartered Accountant
- Demonstrated minimum 4 + years experience in research and analysis and/or government compliance preferably in multiple areas of tax such as excise tax, tobacco, alcohol, motor fuel tax, sales & use.
- Indirect tax, research, consulting, or advisory experience in USA Indirect Taxation
- Ability to serve as analyst for complex tax research efforts related to taxation of sales and use, tobacco, motor fuels, and other commodities in the United States and Canada.
- Excellent research skills ability to locate, understand, and explain complex tax requirements and scenarios from a functional and technical perspective.
- Knowledge of database management systems, able to create basic to complex SQL queries.
