Job description This SOP applies to all mechanical foremen responsible for supervising and managing mechanical operations related to heavy construction vehicles such as JCB Ajax Poclain and Hyva 1 Responsibilities Supervise and manage the maintenance and repair activities of commercial vehicles Ensure that all vehicles are operating efficiently and safely Maintain accurate records of maintenance schedules repairs and service histories Oversee the work of mechanics and other technical staff in the workshop Ensure adherence to safety standards and operational protocols Monitor inventory levels of spare parts and ensure timely procurement Communicate with site managers or project supervisors regarding vehicle status Provide technical guidance and training to junior staff when necessary 2 Pre-Inspection Procedure Vehicle Check Before starting any work on a vehicle perform a visual inspection for any external damage leaks or wear and tear Safety Gear Ensure that the mechanical team is equipped with the appropriate personal protective equipment PPE including gloves safety shoes goggles helmets and hearing protection Tools and Equipment Ensure that all required tools and machinery are available well-maintained and in working condition before beginning any work 3 Maintenance Procedure Preventive Maintenance PM Perform regular preventive maintenance on all vehicles as per the manufacturer s recommendations Check fluid levels oil coolant brake fluid etc tires filters belts and hoses Grease the required components to ensure smooth functioning Inspect hydraulic systems for leaks and ensure proper function Calibrate engine systems checking for any unusual sounds or performance issues Breakdown Maintenance For breakdown repairs quickly assess the situation and identify the root cause of the failure Ensure that the vehicle is properly secured before performing repairs Keep a record of all repairs including the cause of the issue parts replaced and the time taken for the repair Ensure that all repairs are done using genuine spare parts and in accordance with manufacturer guidelines Specialized Work for JCB Ajax Poclain and Hyva JCB Check and maintain hydraulic cylinders ensure smooth functioning of the backhoe and examine the lifting mechanisms Ajax Monitor engine systems gear systems and fuel pumps for wear and tear Inspect the drum for cracks or damages Poclain Inspect the hydraulic circuits and the excavator s boom and arm for any possible leaks cracks or damage Hyva Regularly check the hydraulic pumps cylinders and the truck s lifting mechanism for proper functioning 4 Post-Inspection Procedure After completing maintenance or repairs conduct a post-repair test to verify that the vehicle is functioning properly Clean and return all tools and equipment to their designated places Update maintenance logs and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed Inform the concerned department or supervisor about the status of the vehicle whether ready for use or further attention required 5 Safety and Compliance Always follow the safety guidelines specified by the manufacturer for each type of equipment Ensure that all work is done according to local regulations and workplace safety protocols Make sure all workers are trained in basic safety measures including proper lifting techniques use of fire extinguishers and emergency protocols Implement lockout tagout procedures when working on high-voltage or critical components 6 Troubleshooting Engine Performance Issues If the engine is not starting check fuel levels battery connections and fuses Look for faulty sensors or ignition system problems Hydraulic System Failure If hydraulic pressure is low check for leaks air pockets or low fluid levels Electrical System Malfunctions Check for blown fuses damaged wiring or malfunctioning alternators 7 Parts and Inventory Management Maintain a proper inventory of commonly used spare parts such as filters belts hoses oils and other consumables Regularly check the condition of spare parts and ensure they are stored properly Ensure that only authorized and high-quality parts are used for repairs to avoid rework or safety issues 8 Training and Development Keep up-to-date with the latest technological advancements in vehicle maintenance and repair Attend workshops seminars and training sessions to improve technical skills Provide on-the-job training to junior mechanics and ensure that they understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of vehicle maintenance 9 Reporting Submit daily or weekly reports to management detailing the status of the vehicles ongoing repairs inventory levels and any challenges faced Document any major issues or repairs and communicate them to higher authorities for necessary action 10 Emergency Response In case of accidents or major breakdowns immediately inform the concerned authorities and ensure that the proper emergency procedures are
