Job Description A Diploma Mechanical Engineer in an Inspection & Quality department within the metal industry typically performs hands-on quality control functions, ensuring raw materials, in-process components, and finished products meet engineering specifications and industry standards. Core Job Responsibilities Inspection and Testing: Conduct visual and dimensional inspections of mechanical components, parts, and finished products using precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, height gauges, and bore gauges. Blueprint and Specification Interpretation: Read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and engineering specifications (including Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing - GD&T) to verify product accuracy and compliance with design requirements. Documentation and Reporting: Accurately record and maintain detailed documentation of all inspection results, including test certificates and quality reports. Issue Non-Conformance Reports (NCRs) for any deviations or defects found. Compliance Adherence: Ensure all manufacturing and inspection processes adhere to internal quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001) and relevant industry standards (e.g., ASTM, ASME, AISC). Collaboration and Corrective Action: Work closely with production, engineering, and design teams to communicate quality issues, perform root cause analysis of defects, and implement effective corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Equipment Maintenance: Maintain the accuracy and reliability of all inspection and testing equipment by following established calibration procedures and schedules. Process Improvement: Participate in continuous improvement initiatives (e.g., Lean, Six Sigma) to enhance product quality, reduce waste, and optimize inspection and production workflows. Supplier Quality (Incoming Inspection): Perform quality checks on incoming raw materials and components from suppliers to ensure they meet procurement specifications. Key Skills Required Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of mechanical engineering principles, materials science (especially metals), and various manufacturing processes such as casting, forging, machining, and welding. Measuring Instruments: Hands-on experience with both basic and advanced measuring instruments, potentially including Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs) or Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods (e.g., ultrasonic, magnetic particle inspection). Attention to Detail: Meticulous observation skills to identify minute defects or inconsistencies. Analytical & Problem-Solving Skills: The ability to analyze data, identify problems, and think critically to develop and recommend solutions. Communication Skills: Effective written and verbal communication skills for clear documentation, reporting, and collaboration across different departments. Computer Literacy: Basic knowledge of MS Office (Excel, Word) and familiarity with quality management software (QMS) or ERP systems for data entry and documentation.
